A lifelong Mississippian, Sturgis grew up in Tunica and has resided in DeSoto County, Mississippi, for over thirty years. He attended the University of Mississippi where he earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in English. He has worked as a full-time instructor with Northwest Community College and as an adjunct professor with the University of Mississippi for thirty-five years. He was the recipient of the HEADWAE Teacher of the Year award, an honor for excellence in teaching. In addition to his teaching experience, he was elected as an alderman and later was elected mayor of Walls, Mississippi. He received his real estate license in 2007 and is pleased to be a part of the Burch Realty Group. He is married to sixth generation DeSoto Countian, Mary Austin Monteith, owner and president of Austin Law Firm. They have two children, McGhee and John.
